SharePoint is Microsoft’s first foray into the Enterprise Web 2.0 space and MOSS has Social Software features. Web 2.0 is a term that is used to describe and brand hosted solutions – for example Facebook is a Web 2.0 application for social networking. Enterprise Web 2.0 is a term used to describe solutions that are tailored for business while utilizing best and most useful technology developed in the last several years.
Out of the box MOSS has Wiki’s, Blogs and social computing feature called My Sites (link to those three feature pages respectively). My Sites are the equivalent of a MySpace or Facebook for the enterprise, but instead of focusing on personal information and opinion they offer the ability to find real, useful information - the skills, knowledge and expertise within a distributed organization but not neccesarily easily accessed or exposed to team members, co-workers or managers.
Once enabled, My Sites allow the creation of a personal profile and resume details. My Sites are also used as well as a defined and secure location used to store documents, calendars and contacts. This creates a paradigm shift of storing key information in a personal portal instead of a local desktop or laptop. Because SharePoint data can be accessed via a web browser, or sychronized to many computers through Outlook or third party products employees never have to be without their data.
Blogs and Wiki sites also are powerful tools you can use to share information internally or externally. MOSSHosting.com and SharePointHosting.com both share SharePoint-based blogs, and use an internal Wiki to communicate information between technical team members.
